Hepburn Spa™ and Hepburn Springs Bathhouse™ History

Hepburn Spa was established in 1895 when the Bathhouse building was opened with a small number of mineral water baths after mineral waters were discovered by Swiss Italian Gold Miners. It quickly became Australia’s foremost public mineral water spa bathing facility. Hepburn Springs and Daylesford are surrounded by pure mineral water springs and in fact boasts the largest concentration of natural mineral water springs in Australia. At Hepburn Spa the medicinal properties of mineral water are absorbed osmotically through the skin when bathing to aid and enhance the treatment of conditions such as arthritis, psoriasis and sciatica. Serious health practitioners have long understood the benefits of taking the water.

At an elevation of 700 meters above sea level we boast the highest concentration of mineral water to be found anywhere in Australia.

We are the Spa capital of Australia, having shaped and defined Spa culture in Australia over the past 100 years.

As the largest Spa in Australia, Hepburn Spa continues to innovate with treatment modalities inspired by cultures from around the world.

Hepburn Spa is recognised as a CIDESCO International Therapy Centre, adopting the highest standards of therapies delivery; is a member of the International Spa Association in the United States (ISPA) and the Australasian Spa Association (ASPA).

In 2006, Hepburn Spa signed a unique 'Sister Spa' agreement with Thermae Bath Spa (Bath, United Kingdom), the world famous mineral water Spa at the Roman Spa town, Bath in the UK - where the benefits of Mineral Waters/Spa Therapies have been enjoyed for over 3000 years.

MINERAL WATER

The practice of using natural mineral spring water to prevent or cure diseases goes back 5,000 years to the Bronze Age. Waters rich in sulphur and sulphates are believed to strengthen the immune system, kill bacteria and fungi and are used to treat skin conditions. Hepburn Spa Mineral Springs Wellness Retreat and Bath House specialises in Balneotherapy – bathing for therapeutic purposes.

THE SPA EXPERIENCE

From 1895 when the Mineral Springs Bathhouse was established with only 2 baths, the spa experience focused on “taking the waters”, or “taking the cure”, which involved spending time relaxing in water within tranquil surroundings. Many early European families stayed in the many surrounding guesthouses to be close to the mineral spring waters. Well known for healing properties and therapeutic benefits. At Hepburn Spa Mineral Springs Wellness Retreat and Bath House you can reconnect with nature, a pleasurable experience that awakens the senses.

Mineral Water still remains a key element in our spa experience today.
